Physical Education Print

In grades K – 4, students are instructed on age-appropriate skills.  They learn that being physically active is healthy, and that cardiovascular (aerobic) activity is a necessary component for a healthy life.  Through group play, younger students will learn flexibility exercises, cooperation, following rules of a game, and how to cooperate in a team environment.  Physical fitness testing is introduced in these grades.

In grades 5 - 8, students will further develop team sports skills for soccer, flag football, basketball, team handball, scooter soccer, kickball, dodgeball and volleyball.  Individual sports such as badminton will also be introduced.  Physical fitness testing is done twice a year in grades 5-8 with the mile run, push-ups, sit-ups and flexibility.

Our gymnasium has both boys' and girls' locker room facilities; each student will be assigned a personal gym locker for the school year.  In our physical education program, we require all students in grades 5-8 to wear a gym uniform, which includes blue gym shorts and a reversible “St. John” athletic shirt.  The gym outfits are available through the school, and may be purchased on Registration Day.  New gym locks are required for all students in grades 5-8.  These may also be purchased at Registration, or at the school bookstore.
