Art Talk:  This PTL-sponsored program exposes students to various pieces of art and drawings by famous artists.  Children have the opportunity to learn about prehistoric to modern art…and everything in between!  Parent volunteers present artwork to classrooms once each quarter.  All materials and curriculum are provided by the Media Center, so little prep time is required.  Got a love for art?  We’d love to have you on board!

Assemblies:  Each year, the PTL sponsors 3-4 assemblies for the enrichment and enjoyment of our entire student body.  In past years, assemblies included the “World of Robots,” “Bucketfillers for Life”, and the “SkyDome Planetarium”, and virtual visits from Abe Lincoln, Thomas Edison and Mark Twain.  Feedback on the events was positive ~ these were fun, educational assemblies geared towards enhancing the educational experience of our students.

Authors in April:  Authors in April is a community weeklong event.  Each day, authors visit schools, giving presentations to students and signing books. Each elementary school author visits three different elementary schools every day, and spends about 1½ hours at each school. The middle school author visits one school each day, giving three presentations (one each to 6th, 7th, & 8th graders) at that school. In all the authors speak to well over 10,000 students during their stay.  In addition to school visits, authors attend a benefit dinner. This is an opportunity for adults to meet the authors, have books autographed, enjoy dinner, and listen to a lively presentation by the authors. The Rochester Hills Public Library also hosts an autograph party where the public is invited to meet the authors and have books autographed.  The goal of the Authors In April program is to encourage students to read as well as to appreciate a variety of literature while improving their own creative writing abilities.  For more information, visit www.authorsinapril.org.

Christmas Bazaar:  This is a fun program that allows all of the students at St. John to do their very own Christmas shopping in a safe, on-site environment.  Several weeks before Christmas a gift bazaar is set in Concordia Hall; handcrafted gifts, store purchased items and the like are donated by parents, friends and staff, and sold to the children as Christmas gifts for their families.  Any profit made is used to purchase gifts for the following year.

Eighth Grade Graduation:  The seventh grade parents organize and create a memorable and festive reception for the graduating 8th graders at the conclusion of their graduation ceremonies.

Father / Daughter Dance:  This is a wonderful opportunity to support the dads and daughters of the church and school and host an event filled with fun, food, and dancing!

Field Day:  School’s out…almost!  This is a memorable way for the 1st through 4th graders to end the school year.  Rain or shine, Field Day is an afternoon filled with fun, outdoor activities for the kids to enjoy before school is out.

Free Popcorn!  Whether it’s at Movie Night, or during an assembly, or perhaps during select athletic contests, your PTL is happy to provide free popcorn…fresh from our in-house corn popper!  Follow your nose!

Hospitality: We are pleased to also have a Hospitality Team at St. John.  These dedicated folks provide refreshments and goodies at a variety of fellowship events throughout the school year.   Whether it’s a New Parent Welcome Reception, or an event for the students…the Hospitality Team jumps into action.

Kindergarten Closing Service and Reception:  Similar in scope to the Eighth Grade graduation, the first grade parents organize and create a memorable reception for the families and Kindergarteners at the conclusion of their closing service.

Mother / Son Bowling:  This popular early spring fellowship event is a terrific opportunity to support the moms and sons of both our school and church.  (Fellowship outing may vary from year-to-year; check with the school office in the spring!)

Movie Night:  Cold weather and long nights got your kids down?  Take ‘em to the movies…at St. John!  Periodically, the PTL will sponsor “Movie Night in the Gym” ~ free of charge!  Bring your blankets, pillows and friends, stretch out and enjoy a movie on our projection screen.  Parents ~ You’re encouraged to stay and enjoy fellowship as well.  Bring an appetizer or dessert to pass.  PTL provides the drinks and popcorn to ensure a fun night for all!

Prayer Team:  The Prayer Team is a group of individuals dedicated to meet once a week to pray for the children, school, and faculty at St. John, as well as within the Rochester community. The Team Leader is responsible for coordinating and communicating the day, time and location each week to meet and pray.

T Shirts!  “Just because…”  That’s why the PTL gifted every student, staff and faculty member with a brand new, updated St. John Eagle t shirt to proudly wear during Lutheran Schools Week!  Interested in buying one for yourself?  Contact the school office!  (This is not a fundraiser, so the prices are terrific!)

Teacher Appreciation: This is a great opportunity to show the teachers how much we appreciate their dedication and love for the children by providing breakfast, lunches and many other opportunities of hospitality during P/T conferences as well as a designated school month.

Third Grade Dessert Theatre: This event is for the 3rd grade students in conjunction with the Lutheran High Northwest Drama Club. Selected stories, written by third grade students are acted out by Lutheran High drama students the last Friday in January. This is an evening performance at the high school followed by desserts and refreshments for all families attending.
