Scrip means "substitute money." The PTL Scrip Program allows people to order gift cards from St. John for the face value amount to a number of retail stores, restaurants, grocery stores, and other participating retailers. Then, St. John purchases the gift certificates on your behalf at a discount. 75% of the discount earned is returned to your family as tuition credit. (The remaining 25% of the discount goes toward the school’s Tuition Assistance fund.) For the 2010-2011 school year, scrip families saved $14,500 on tuition, and $4200 was deposited into St. John’s Tuition Assistance fund. If you do not have a child attending St. John School, you can choose to have the 75% of the discount go to a family of your choice or to have the money go into the tuition assistance fund.
The reason for the effectiveness of scrip is simple: families generate revenue through purchases they would make anyway. Groceries, clothing, toys, gifts, even gasoline can be purchased with scrip. An organization of 150 families easily spends between one and two million dollars per year on food, clothing and other essentials. If these families use scrip for these purchases, they can raise as much as $40,000 to $80,000 per year for their organization -- without spending an additional penny! Start by using Busch’s reloadable cards, or use scrip for Hollywood Market or Whole Foods. Every time you grocery shop, you save on tuition. It really is that simple.
