At St. John Lutheran Church & School, we are One in Jesus...Reaching Many. Serving others in name of Jesus is a way for our students to give thanks to God and share the love of Jesus. Throughout the school year, we intentionally seek to provide opportunities for our students and their families to serve at St. John and within the community.
Worship Service Participation
Throughout the school year, our various choirs and bands participate in worship services, helping to develop their individual and group performance skills. More importantly, singing, playing bells and playing instruments in worship service provides students with an opportunity to give thanks and praise to God.
Nursing Home Caroling
Each December, Mrs. Nelson's 1st grade class prepares special angel sweatshirts and jingle bell bracelets, in anticipation of their annual trip to a local Nursing Home. The class sings a variety of Christmas songs and then has the opportunity to meet many of the residents one-on-one.
Chapel Offerings and Casual for a Cause Donations
During the school year, students are able to provide an offering at weekly chapel. In addition, students may pay $1 to dress casual for "Causal for a Cause" days held throughout the year. The funds from these offerings and Casual for a Cause collections are given to various mission partners throughout the year. In supporting these agencies, the students are able to share the blessings that God has given them with others. We are blessed to be a blessing. The 2017-2018 organizations are below:
- 1st quarter - The Rochester Neighborhood House
- 2nd quarter - Lutheran Church Charities Comfort Dogs
- 3rd quarter - Hearts for Jesus (supporting LSEM) and St. Paul. Pontiac
- 4th quarter - Owen's Mission
- Year-long - Wigs for Kids (look for more details soon)
Gifts for All God's Children
St. John Lutheran Church & School partners with the Gifts for All God's Children organization to purchase gifts for at-risk children in urban areas. Students purchase and wrap a gift item as requested by a child in need. Items include toys, hats, boots, jackets, books and more. Students take their gifts to the front of the sanctuary for a blessing during a special chapel service held in December, after which presents are distributed to the designated families to open on Christmas morning!
Feed My Starving Children
Feed My Starving Children is a non-profit Christian organization committed to feeding God’s children hungry in body and spirit. Children and adults hand-pack meals specifically formulated for malnourished children, and these are shipped to distribution partners around the world. St. John has participated with this great program in the past, and this year, our students will participate during the school day, working together to package meals for those in need.
